The Vintage Bradbury: Ray Bradbury's Own Selection of His Best Stories
Published in Paperback by Vintage Books (July, 1990)
Author: Ray Bradbury
Average review score:

How to make the bizarre believable
Almost all stories contained in this volume have strangely weird premises. Almost all characters are truly odd or at least genuinely quirky. Almost all plots have surprising twists and strain the reader's imagination. And yet, each story is believable, is frighteningly real, and of a bizarre, almost grotesque beauty, combining playful fantasy with profound issues revolving around family and society, and I found myself rooting for the disillusioned outsider again and again. The tragedy is poignant and bittersweet - a real feast to read.

bradbury in my ear!
Ray loves words like a father loves his children. He caresses his images and then holds out his hand to you. What a trip he has in store. Come along!

Volkswagen Bug: The People's Car (Autobahn Road Series, Vol 1)
Published in Hardcover by Evergreen Pr (April, 1988)
Author: Ray Miller
Average review score:

A good read!
Although the basic shape of the Volkswagen didn't change over the years, many detail changes were made. This book does a good job of documenting them. There isn't much text, but the book if full of detail photos showing the small (and sometimes not-so-small) changes from year to year. If you're restoring your Volkswagen to 100% stock condition, you want to know how to tell a '65 Beetle from a '66, or you just like Volkswagens, this book is a good read.

Great Book
This is a great book for noting the year-to-year changes in the Bug. Almost every change is photographed and documented so that you can see it. There isn't much in the way of writing, but mainly pictures and explanations of the VW's and the yearly changes, including the various dealer installed options. This is a great book, especialy for identifying what is original or how something is supposed to look.

Wagon Train
Published in Paperback by Grosset & Dunlap (November, 1997)
Authors: Deborah Kogan Ray and Sydelle A. Kramer
Average review score:

Very well done!
I enjoed the scenery as if I was onboard. For a more fictional train ride try Playtrain.

Wagon Train
I liked Wagon Train by Sydelle Kramer because it is about people travelling. I liked when they went through the water and I liked the storms they had in the book. I liked the pictures expecially the one with the family in the wagon with the dog in it. I like reading about them dancing until their feet were sore. That is what I liked about the book.

Weakness and Deceit: U.S. Policy and El Salvador
Published in Hardcover by Times Books (May, 1984)
Author: Ray Bonner
Average review score:

A memorable book
US foreign policy was neatly summed up by a commentator on 'Newsnight' recently. A country is like a game of poker in which you play a hand and then cut your losses and get out if things don't work out while the European stance is arguably more socialistic. Little seems to have changed then, judging by this horrifying book, burning with indignation by Raymond Bonner.
The Reagan administration has been deemed culpable by some over Central American injustice, but the 'weakness' of the title applies as much to the decisions made by the Carter administration, despite avowedly making human rights the 'soul of our foreign policy.' America could not conceive of any popular revolution as not instigated by the Soviet Union. Ironic then, that this book should show the importance of religion, not as a take it or leave it life style choice of the privileged west, but as a vital cohesive force against the forces of Nazi tyranny, which this undoubtably was. It is still inexplicable to me that a nation could make such an enormous sacrifice in fighting Facism during the war, only to come to this deplorable conclusion. Do the ends justify the means? Mr Bonner leaves us in no doubt.

A real eye-opener
I couldn't put this book down. Bonner has identified the major players in US-El Salvador relations in that time period and done an excellent job of contrasting the "party line" (the propoganda from the State Department and much of the press) from what he saw on the "front line" while living in El Salvador as a reporter for the NY Times. This book is not for the week of stomach, as it very graphically describes the fates of many people who died in the struggle. He has done an incredible job of organizing declassified documents and press clippings to show how the American public was deceived.

Awsome book
I went on line today just to find this book. I saw it at a friends house, her 6 year old daugher was painting out of it, and I fell in love with it. My seven year old son wanted to try some of the crat ideas and my 12 year old daughter couldn't wait to try some of the painting ideas. I highly recomend this book. It is a great value and it will keep the kids intertained for hours.

Ideal book for craft and drawing
This is an excellent book for learning step by step drawing and craft work for children aged 4 to 10

When You Mean Business About Yourself: Achieving Personal Success Through Lessons From the World's Best Corporations
Published in Hardcover by Rutledge Hill Press (01 April, 2002)
Author: Ray Capp
Average review score:

Don't Put Your Dreams on the Back Burner
If you've ever had a dream that you've put on the back burner, this book will make alot of sense to you. Capp explains that you don't have to give up your dream just because you have got to live your daily life. Capp's intriguing thought process leads you through a whole new way of thinking about successfully pursuing goals. Most importantly, Capp gives you permission to pursue those dreams for your sake and the sake of all concerned. I found it extremely motivating and would recommend it to anyone who's looking to renew that "spark" for living.

Pithy and Pertinent
What a valuable -- and easy -- read. Anyone trying to get their life to better align with personal goals should read this book carefully. Capp manages to bring personal growth strategies and solutions into focus while being extremely entertaining. As a business person, it was especially poignant for me. A perfect carry-on for air travel.

Willeford
Published in Hardcover by Dennis McMillan Pubns (December, 1997)
Author: Don Herron
Average review score:

Great insight into a great writer.
This book is a must for any fan of Charles Willeford's books and writing. Author Don Herron actually met and got to know Willeford during the latter's lifetime, and the book is as much a memoir of how Herron came to discover and appreciate this little known literary crime writer as it is a conventional biography/bibliography/critique of Willeford. I first read it at about the same time I was discovering Willeford's Hoke Moseley series, which are marvelous stories about a middle aged Miami cop's confused personal life intertwined with his encounters with some very memorable pyschopaths. Herron's book gave some great insights into Willeford's creative processes during the creation of Hoke and other works and gradually shows how Willeford came to be such a powerful storyteller.
My own recommendation is to purchase this book even if you've not discovered Willeford, as Herron is a pretty good storyteller in his own right. I'm certain that after reading this work you'll want to check out CW's titles. Of course, for the long time fan of Willeford this book is the answer to most questions you may have had.
A definite 5 stars.

If you love Willeford, you must own this book!
I've been a Willeford fan for many years. This is a great way to gain insight into the life and mind of a great writer. Having read all the books by Willeford I could get my hands on, it was wonderful to read words from a man that knew and loved Charles Willeford. I use the book as a constant resource for infomation (it has a complete bibliography)to make sure I'm not buying a book (renamed) that I already own.

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy Read Four Science Fiction Classics: Foundation: The Psychohistorians/Mimsy Were the Borogoves/the Martian Chronic
Published in Audio Cassette by Caedmon Audio Cassette (December, 1993)
Authors: Isaac Asimov, Henry Kuttner, Ray Bradbury, Robert A. Heinlein, William Shatner, Silhouette, and Leonard Nimoy
Average review score:

A Superb Collection
FOUR SCIENCE FICTION CLASSICS is an exceptional compilation of the absolute best the genre had to offer in the 1940s and 1950s. It is composed of six powerful stories which transcend the decades in which they were written, stirring the heart and mind as powerfully now as when they were first published.

While these stories would shine under any conditions, the narrations of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy actually serve to further energize the prose. I was especially moved by the performance of William Shatner. Despite having been a fan of Star Trek for decades, I was completely unprepared for the depth and the brilliance of his vocal talents. Shatner's clear insight into the stories and their characters radiates with every word and intonation.

I could not more strongly recommend either an audio book or a science fiction collection.

Interesting combination
I only wanted "Mimsy Were the Borogoves" and it did come separate on tape and even on vinyl at one time. It did not hurt to get the rest of the tapes. Foundation: The Psychohistorians is what the Foundation trilogy is all about and the newer foundation books you can read the separate reviews. The Martian Chronicles is ok but I do not want to spend time reviewing this section, as better reviews will be under the book description.

However Mimsy is a different animal. So I will say something about this. It is a small sci-fi story about a formula that allows you into an alternate universe that everyone used to have access to. The problem with getting there is that it requires a different paradigm and a formula. The paradigm requires a mindset that diapers as we get older and the formula is in front of us if we know where to look. An added plus is that it is read to us enthusiastically by William Shatner
